Meghalaya Tour Packages: How to Plan the Trip Without Wasting Days on the Road

Most people plan Meghalaya by looking at Google Maps. Cherrapunji is about 55 km from Shillong, so it looks like an easy day. Then you spend two hours on hill roads, stop for a fog-covered viewpoint, and reach the waterfall just as the clouds close in.

We’ve been planning Meghalaya trips since 2021, and this is the first thing we tell every traveller: the distance is never the problem; the time is. This guide covers how many days you need, what a realistic itinerary looks like, when to go, and what a Meghalaya tour package should include.

Real Drive Times (Approximate)

RouteDistanceTime on the road
Guwahati Airport → Shillong~100 km3 to 3.5 hours
Shillong → Cherrapunji (Sohra)~55 km2 hours
Shillong → Dawki~80 km3 hours
Dawki → Mawlynnong~20 km45 min to 1 hour
Shillong → Jowai~65 km2 hours

Add photo stops, lunch, and traffic near Shillong, and every leg takes longer. So we plan one major area per day and never three.

How Many Days Do You Need?

  • 4 nights / 5 days: Enough for Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Mawlynnong if you don’t rush. Best for first-timers. See our 4 Nights / 5 Days Meghalaya package.
  • 5 to 6 nights: Lets you add Nongriat (Double Decker Root Bridge) or a night near Dawki without exhausting yourself.
  • 7 nights or more: Worth it if you want Jowai, the Jaintia Hills, or a slow trip with fewer hotel changes. Check our longer Meghalaya packages.

Our honest opinion: 3 days is too short. You’ll spend most of it in the car and remember very little.

Sample 4N/5D Itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong. Airport or station pickup, a chai stop at Umiam Lake, then check in and rest. Don’t plan anything big today.

Day 2: Cherrapunji day trip. Start by 7:30 AM. Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, and Seven Sisters Falls are best seen before the afternoon clouds arrive. Return to Shillong by evening.

Day 3: Dawki and Mawlynnong. This is a long day, so leave early. Boating on the Umngot, then the village walk at Mawlynnong. Return to Shillong at night.

Day 4: Shillong local. Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Police Bazaar, and a café evening. A slow day on purpose.

Day 5: Drop to Guwahati. Book flights after 4 PM or trains after 5 PM, because the road can be delayed by rain or traffic.

Places Worth Your Time (and What to Expect)

Shillong

Think of it as your base, not the main attraction. It’s good for cafés, markets, and easy evenings, but the real Meghalaya starts outside the city. Stay here 2 nights at most on a short trip. Full details in our Shillong travel guide.

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave, and Seven Sisters Falls are the standard stops. The thing nobody mentions is that fog decides everything. On a clear morning the views are stunning, and on a bad day you see white nothing. Go early and keep a flexible plan. More in our Cherrapunji guide.

If you’re going to Nongriat for the Double Decker Root Bridge, it’s roughly 3,500 steps each way. Treat it as its own half-day and not as a quick add-on.

Dawki

The Umngot River is the highlight, and water clarity depends on season. In the drier months it can look almost transparent, while in monsoon it turns muddy. It’s also crowded on weekends and holidays, so go on a weekday if you can. For a calmer experience, consider staying near Shnongpdeng for kayaking or camping. Read our Dawki travel guide before you plan.

Mawlynnong

It’s famous as a clean village, and it is neat, but it isn’t a secret anymore. Go early to enjoy it quietly. Combine it with Dawki, as they are close. See Mawlynnong village details.

Jowai and the Jaintia Hills

Only worth adding if you have 6+ days. It’s quieter, greener, and far less crowded. Explore the Jowai and Jaintia Hills.

Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

  • October to April: Clearer skies, easier roads, better views. Most travellers should go in this window. December and January are cold at night, so carry warm layers.
  • March to May: Pleasant, with occasional showers.
  • June to September: Monsoon. Waterfalls are at their fullest, and everything is green, but landslides, road delays, and low visibility are real. We’d only recommend it to travelers who are flexible with their plan.

If your main goal is Dawki’s clear water and easy sightseeing, avoid peak monsoon. If your goal is roaring waterfalls, monsoon is actually the better choice. Want a month-wise breakdown? Read our best time to visit Meghalaya guide.

Meghalaya Tour Package Cost

Our 4 Nights / 5 Days Meghalaya package starts around ₹37,500 per person (rates change with season, so please confirm before booking). Longer packages cost more depending on duration and route.

What moves the price:

  • Season (peak winter and holiday weeks cost more)
  • Hotel category, and whether you choose a homestay
  • Group size, since sharing a vehicle lowers the per-person cost
  • Vehicle type
  • Number of nights and destinations

Ask for a written quotation that lists inclusions and exclusions. It saves arguments later.

What a Good Package Should Include

  • Hotel or homestay stays as per plan
  • Private vehicle with a driver for the whole trip
  • Sightseeing as per itinerary
  • Airport or railway station pickup and drop
  • Someone reachable on the phone during the trip

Usually not included: flights or train tickets to Guwahati, most meals except breakfast, entry tickets for some activities, shopping, and personal expenses. Always check these before paying.

How to Reach Meghalaya

Guwahati (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport and Guwahati Railway Station) is the entry point for most travelers. From there, Shillong is a road journey of 3 to 3.5 hours. Our team arranges pickup so you’re not hunting for taxis after landing.

Mistakes We See Travellers Make

  1. Packing too many places in one day. Two main stops a day is plenty.
  2. Planning Dawki and Cherrapunji on the same day. It looks possible on a map, but it will leave you exhausted.
  3. Booking a hotel only for price. A cheap stay far from the next day’s route costs you hours.
  4. Wearing bad shoes. Root bridge steps and wet trails need proper grip.
  5. Skipping a rain jacket because it’s “not monsoon.” Hill weather changes fast in any month.
  6. Booking a same-day flight out of Guwahati after a hill drive. Give yourself buffer time.

Which Trip Fits You?

  • Families: Fewer long days, comfortable stays, and skip the long root bridge trek. See our Meghalaya family packages.
  • Couples: A slower plan with one scenic stay near Dawki or Cherrapunji. See our Meghalaya couple packages.
  • Friends: Add kayaking, camping, and trekking.
  • Nature lovers: Extra days in the Jaintia Hills and less time in Shillong.

We adjust routes by dates and group size instead of giving everyone one fixed itinerary.

Can I Combine Kaziranga with Meghalaya?

Yes. If you have a few extra days, a Kaziranga safari on the Assam side pairs well with the Meghalaya hills. We currently offer Assam–Meghalaya combination packages too.
